You made this point, which is one of the most unknown facts behind today's insanity of the GOP and right wing politics: "While Duke left the Klan, its white robes and cross burning behind, he spent his career trying to rebrand white nationalism." I heard him express this sentiment back int he 70s and knew what was coming. Over the decades I have witnessed the white supremacy's movement from white-robed Klan meetings to the robes of the Supreme Court.
Duke and his white supremacy movement was successful. Under the last administration, white supremacy had reached the top level of government in America.
One of the other things of note is how this same group of miscreants has pitted minorities against one another. Old allies are no more: Jews and Black Americans working together for a common cause, and so on. Fomenting hate, prejudice, and divisiveness has been a successful campaign, and minorities have fallen victim to it, doing the dirty work.
We must stand together, because minorities are collectively the majority. Issues such as abortion (and many others) have been used to fragment the minority bloc. For instance, Hispanics who should be on the side of Black Americans and other minorities, will often vote Republican because as Catholics they are against abortion. So they are supporting fascism and white supremacy over a single issue that is really not what it is presented to be.
To any normal, logical, intelligent, open mind, the idea of racism seems insane and absurd. It takes superficial people to fall for it, yet it happens again and again; it's even recognizable in the comments under your articles.
Human beings are confused, conflicted, and scared, and this is the perfect breeding ground for racism.
There is not even a real group called "white people." It is a fabricated idea promoted by racism. But there is a real thing called white supremacy, but it does not involve all people of lighter skin.
As I see it the only hope we have is to understand ourselves AND for minorities to unite instead of being allowed to turn against one another.
