Yes, and we ultimately have to see if what we are told is actually true by first removing the interference of the judgmental and limited sense of self. If we really want to know what we are the only way to find out is through our own experience that has nothing to do with a teaching, even from a worthy and sincere teacher. Our lives are our own.
