While we may say that religious people can function in society regardless of their insane way of seeing the world or their acceptance of beliefs in lieu of thoughts, we do see the abnormality manifest in society at large, don't we? What, for example, is the effect of religion when, on certain dates throughout the year all businesses and government offices close down in honor of a man who walked on water, turned water into wine and whose flesh is consumed in the form of a wafer? And how crazy is it that a homosexual or scantily clad woman can be beaten to a pulp by religious extremists as they cross the street in a particular section of town? Truly, these sorts of events are dysfunctional even if the individual is given a pass.

And another point relative to your article, I have always wondered about the approach of psychiatry that in my estimation has little to do with psychology. Psychiatrists are physicians who use drugs to treat mental disorders. They found their practices on the assumption that chemistry is all there is to the emotions and feelings of human beings. Unlike psychology, psychiatry seems to pretend that there is little more to a human being than chemistry and physiology making them glorified mechanics of the brain and nervous system. Of course not all psychiatrists are like this, but the few who are not are the exception.
