There is so much to think about here, but my first inclination is to say that the house is what it looks like — a dwelling with a roof, walls, plumbing, etc. The self, though, is a belief, intangible, unreliable, always-changing, and not even the doer or thinker. It makes assumptions of the world and other people, because it is consumed by its own thoughts and beliefs. In essence, it gets in its own way.
