People are wont to worship a spiritual leader rather than to take his teachings personally and do their own enquiry. The spiritual leader, such as Ramana Maharshi, Jiddu Krishnamurti, and others, explicitly taught how to enquire into your own sense of self to find your own realization, but this isn't what most people will do. Some will listen, or heed the message, while most will not.
I like what you wrote here. It is really on point. 30 years ago my Kung Fu master, an ardent Chen Buddhist told me, "If you meet the Buddha on a road, kill him." This is a shocking metaphor that really gets the message across.
