To your question about avoiding depression and hopelessness...
This is the crux of the issue. It is only the sense of self that holds such thoughts and feelings as hopelessness, depression, and anxiety. These are caused by unmet desires — the self has desires and when they do not actualize then the self is depressed, hopeless, etc. The self has desires because it does not realize that it is actually the totality of consciousness, so it believes it must attain, obtain, and receive something to be happier or sated.
So there are basically two ways that hopelessness and depression are addressed. The first is through self-enquiry that can dissolve the attachment of consciousness with the world of the body and all of its associations. Very very few people have any interest to do this; in fact, it causes a great deal of fear to even think about it. The second way is by means of psychological help, therapy. In this case, the self is placated, given a sense of purpose, and reconditioned. However, this does not have anything to do with disassociating with the self and its attachments.
