I agree with what you have written. However, what I am pointing to is a distinction that causes the individual, society, and the planet suffering. This is the self that needs to be seen as an illusion if one wants to step out of the cycle of pain and suffering that we all inherit and then perpetuate by conceiving of ourselves as autonomous, the center of reality, all-important, and in constant need and wanting.
So, yes, as you said, biology regards the self as a construct, as do other disciplines, but this is only a fragment of what is going on regarding our individual pain and suffering. As you suggest, we do need a sense of self to navigate our world.
