Clearly, Jung was familiar with Eastern mysticism, including the works of Ramana Maharshi who lived in Southern India and died in 1951. Since the 20s, Ramana taught at length about the Self (capital “S”) as being synonymous with consciousness and God. This Self is not the God of western religion, however. Rather, it is the very essence of all that is, the totality of all that includes all expressions, thoughts, and so on. Applying this to psychology was a stroke of genius to the western world, but nothing new to the East.
